Fighting Dental Infection While Preserving Your Natural Teeth

Dental pain and swelling, or increased tooth sensitivity are not normal, which means that they are signs that something isn’t quite right inside of your mouth. They also mean that you should visit the dentist as soon as possible to figure out what exactly is going on, and to get the treatment you need. In many cases, swelling, pain and sensitivity are signs that you have a dental infection, which, in most cases, can only be treated with a root canal.

Now, don’t let the thought of a root canal scare you off. If your tooth is infected, it is essential that you get the necessary treatment – and fast – to prevent it from spreading or causing greater damage. At Irvine Spectrum Dental, we understand that root canals have a bad reputation. However, we are committed to using the latest dental technology and techniques to give our patients the most comfortable and effective treatments possible, including your root canal.

Next, our dentists will drill a hole into the tooth to access the root canals underneath. Using small tools and gentle movements, our dentists will remove the infected and damaged pulp inside of the root canals. Once all of the pulp is removed, we will fill the root canals with a medicated filling material. To top off your treatment, we will place a customized dental crown, ultimately restoring the tooth’s natural shape, size and function.

Some patients, when thinking about a root canal, may think that just removing the tooth is a better and less painful option. With today’s technology, root canals are actually quite comfortable, and tooth extractions are not always the answer. At our practice, we do all that we can to help you preserve your natural teeth, as that is always a better option to removing and replacing them.
